(47) Es gibt interessante Parallelen zwischen der Kernkraft und der Gentechnik. Beide Techniken werden nicht benötigt, weil sie Produkte erzeugen (Elektrizität, Saatgut), die auch konventionell herstellbar sind, zu niedrigeren Preisen. Beide sind umständlich und ressourcenhungrig im Vergleich zu konkurrierenden Techniken. Beide werden von einer breiten Öffentlichkeit kritisch gesehen, und beide werden von Absichten angetrieben, die ihre Befürworter geheimhalten wollen. Im Falle der Kernkraft verschleiert man jene Aktivitäten, die im Zusammenhang mit Atomwaffen stehen. Außerdem sollen möglichst hohe Subventionen eingestrichen werden. Bei der Gentechnik ist das Ziel, das Potenzial des geistigen Eigentums als Rechtsgut zu nutzen, um den Saatguthandel zu monopolisieren und letztlich die Landwirtschaft zu kontrollieren. Die vielleicht wichtigste Parallele ist aber, dass man mit beiden Techniken versucht, Kontrolle über hochkomplexe und ungenügend verstandene Systeme auszuüben (Reaktoren und lebende Organismen) – unter eng gesteckten Rahmenbedingungen und über lange Zeiträume hinweg. In der Hinsicht sind beide wohl einzigartig unter allen menschlichen Bestrebungen.

(50) Auch Journalisten machen sich die Werbesprache der Industrie zu eigen. Das wird an den Begriffen deutlich, mit denen sie die Biotechnik beschreiben. Der Wissenschaftspresse gelingt es nicht, deren Sprache zu analysieren, und aufzudecken, wie sie die tatsächlichen Absichten der Industrie verschleiert. Gene werden „eingesetzt“, als ob die Biotechnik ein simples Baukastensystem wäre. Organismen werden gen„technisch“ manipuliert, als ob es sich um Maschinen handelte. Neue Eigenschaften „genehmigt“ genannt, obwohl die Gesundheitsbehörde FDA in den USA lediglich beratend tätig ist. Der Zuständigkeitsbereich des US-Landwirtschaftsministeriums wiederum ist stark begrenzt, und die USUmweltschutzbehörde EPA spielt oft gar keine Rolle.
