HISTORY - DIE GESCHICHTE
Polish immigrant Sol Koffler arrived in the United States at the age of 13, with only a primary school education, but was full of ambition. In 1932 Koffler founded the ‘American Tourister’ luggage company in Providence, Rhode Island by investing his life savings in his dream. His goal was to create a significantly more durable product than any competitor’s in the same price range. Sol was determined to produce luggage priced at $1 in the midst of the Great Depression. The company quickly established a reputation by producing quality luggage at a reasonable price. It was also an innovator. American Tourister was the first luggage manufacturer to make an all-vinyl case. Koffler was one of the first to see the benefits of a revolutionary new material developed during the war, and he introduced moulded plastic luggage before anyone else did. In the 1950s, he improved the moulded plastic luggage manufacturing process to create a nearly indestructible, low-cost product. As time went on, the company introduced padded handles, stronger locks and an expanded line of colours. Company innovations continued through the ‘90s when American Tourister won the Industrial Designers Society of America award for its EasyTurn wheel handling system. Around the same time, American Tourister was acquired by Samsonite and subsequently became the second most important luggage brand in the world. Today, Samsonite continues to invest in the American Tourister brand, supporting its aspirations to further increase its presence around the globe as an accessible, yet high quality luggage brand with a focus on products for family, leisure and youth travel.
Der polnische Einwanderer Sol Koffler kam im Alter von dreizehn Jahren mit einer nur einfachen Schulbildung, aber voller Energie in die Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika. Im Jahr 1932 gründete Koffler dann in Providence, Rhode Island, eine Fabrik für Reisegepäck, indem er seine gesamten Ersparnisse für die Verwirklichung seines Traums einsetzte. Wirtschaftlich mitten in der großen Depression war er entschlossen, Gepäckstücke für den Preis von 1 Dollar herzustellen. Sein Ziel war es, zu gleichen Preisen strapazierfähigere Produkte als die Konkurrenz herzustellen. Das Unternehmen war schnell dafür bekannt, Qualitätsgepäck zum günstigen Preis anzubieten. Und es brachte Innovationen in den Markt. American Tourister war der erste Gepäckhersteller, der einen Koffer komplett aus Vinyl herstellte. Sol Koffler hatte als einer der Ersten die Vorteile dieses revolutionären, während des Kriegs entwickelten Materials erkannt und vor allen anderen Anbietern seiner Branche ein aus Kunststoff geformtes Gepäckstück entwickelt. In den 1950er Jahren verbesserte er das Produktionsverfahren für Reisegepäck aus geformtem Kunststoff, um so nahezu unzerstörbare Niedrigpreis-Produkte herzustellen. Im Laufe der Zeit führte das Unternehmen gepolsterte Griffe und stärkere Schlösser ein, und erweiterte die Farbpalette. Weitere Innovationen folgten und in den 90er Jahren gewann American Tourister die Auszeichnung der Industrial Designers Society of America für sein „EasyTurn“-System des Ziehgestänges. American Tourister wurde in den frühen 90er Jahren von Samsonite übernommen und nahm in jener Zeit den zweiten Platz unter den wichtigsten Reisegepäckmarken weltweit ein. Heute investiert Samsonite weiterhin in die Marke American Tourister und deren Zielsetzung, die globale Stärke bei der Herstellung erschwinglicher, erstklassiger Qualitätsprodukte weiter auszubauen und dabei den Fokus auf Familien und junge Reisende zu setzen.
