Announcing a new prize for portrait photography starting in 2018 The August Sander Award for Portrait Photography endowed by Ulla Bartenbach and Prof. Dr. Kurt Bartenbach, in collaboration with Die Photographische Sammlung/SK Stiftung Kultur, Cologne, Germany August Sander Award: The prize is endowed with €5,000 to use as the winner sees fit. In collaboration with the winning artist, Die Photographische Sammlung/SK Stiftung Kultur will give the opportunity of an exhibition of his or her works in Room 2 of its gallery. Call for entries and participation: Starting in 2018, the August Sander Award will be conferred every two years. The prize is designed to promote young, contemporary artistic approaches to objective and conceptual photography. In honor of Sander’s seminal contribution to portrait photography, the photographic works by the applicants should primarily revolve around the theme of portraying people. International artists aged 40 and under whose work focuses mainly on photography are eligible to apply. Application: In addition to an informal cover letter, the application should also include a brief biography and concise documentation of the artist’s previous work as well as presenting a largely completed series of maximum 20 photographs (unframed working prints, no larger than a maximum edge length of 60cm) intended especially for the competition. The jury will only consider works for review that form a thematically linked group or sequence; single images will not be considered. The submitted works must not have won any awards in other competitions.

The applicant confirms with his/her signature that he/she holds all rights to the photographs submitted to the competition. Rights of third parties may not be affected. Participation includes a transfer of rights/ ranting of indemnity for all activities involved in the award ceremony and its documentation, such as public relations, etc. Applicants must cover the expenses for sending in their documents. Documents from applicants not selected by the jury will be returned by regular mail to the address specified by the sender and at his/her expense. Die Photographische Sammlung/SK Stiftung Kultur assumes no liability for the loss or damage of documents and materials, including but not limited to loss or damage in transport. The documents can alternatively be delivered by hand by appointment and/or picked up in person after the jury session. Jury: The jury is composed of five members: a curator, an art historian from the academic field, an artist, a representative from the donator family, and a representative from Die Photographische Sammlung/SK Stiftung Kultur. Award ceremony: The award ceremony will take place in September 2018 on the premises of Die Photographische Sammlung in Cologne. Entry deadline:
