A Level Spanish – summer work This work will prepare you for the demands of A Level Spanish. We are asking you to complete some grammar exercises which should revise many verb forms you have met at GCSE level as grammatical accuracy will allow you to express yourself fluently and creatively at A level. We are also asking you to watch at least one Spanish film as studying an A level is not only about learning the language, it is also about finding out about and immersing yourself in the Spanish culture. Finally, we would like you to complete a small amount of written work so as to keep up your fluency over the next few months. You must :  

 

Complete all activities in the Spanish verb revision booklet. Use the descriptions as to how to form the verbs as a guide and then complete the following activities. Watch a French film – there is a good selection of World Cinema films and series on Netflix or you might try; El Laberinto del Fauno (which you’ll study next year), El Orfanato (The Orphanage), Volver, Todo Sobre Mi Madre, Julieta, Ocho Apellidos Vascos. It’s also a good idea to keep an eye on what’s on at The Tyneside Cinema as they have a very good offering of World Cinema films. Write a review of it of around 50 -100 words using the help sheet provided. Write an introductory letter to your A level teachers about yourself. This should be around 250 words long. Go on the following website http://los40.com/lista40/ and choose five Spanish songs from the charts that you like. Be ready to share them and say why you like them in Spanish when you return to school.

You should : 

Use the ‘Memrise’ website or the Memrise app (available free in the app store) to access the interactive vocabulary exercises for AS Spanish vocabulary. https://www.memrise.com/course/1612689/aqa-a-levelspanish-includes-as-vocabulary/ Complete the two AS level reading comprehensions in the pack on one of the first topics we will study.

You could : 

Go to the following website : http://www.rtve.es/alacarta/videos/telediario/ and watch the day’s news. If you download the rtve app you can watch a 4 minute news summary. Try to watch this at least twice a week. It will be hard at first, don’t expect to understand everything and use the images and transcript to help you too. Go to a Spanish national newspaper’s website like ‘El País’ http://www.elpais.com and have a go at reading some articles about what is currently happening in Spain and the Spanish-speaking world. Read a Spanish book even if it is in translation but we recommend; Como Agua Para Chocolate, El Coronel no Tiene Quien le Escriba (which you’ll study next year), La Casa de los Espíritus, Réquiem por un campesino español, La Sombra del Viento, La Casa de Bernarda Alba Keep a learning log of everything you have done to develop your Spanish or your knowledge of Spanishspeaking countries and their culture
