Dear Families, It seems like Christmas was just over, and we were looking forward to Spring Break way far away in March! Here it is!! Here is what we have been learning about this week: Religion-Ash Wednesday and Lent were important topics this week. We also started learning about The Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. Math-The students studied more about fractions this week. They took a fraction test on Thursday. When we come back from Spring Break, we will be starting a unit on measurement (inches, centimeters, gallons, liters, time, and more). Reading-Our genre for the month of March is nonfiction. We have been learning about the features of nonfiction books and finding these features in real books. On Wednesday, the class worked with me to learn to write a bibliography card for a book that we will read and take notes on during reading class. In the next month, we will be working on taking notes on other nonfiction books. The students had a chance to read with their 4K Reading Buddies on Wednesday. Both groups of students look forward to this activity every other week! Grammar-The topics this week were a continuation of progressive verbs (verbs that end in -ing) and verbs + not as a contraction (is + not = isn’t). Writing-The students did a prewriting activity where they drew five shapes on a paper and then tried to give detailed explanations to a friend who drew the shapes based on the first student’s word choice. Sometime, the drawings were close and sometimes, not so close. They discovered that word choice is important when explaining something. Science-The students finished their science unit on weather today! Our next science unit will start about 4 weeks after Spring Break. That unit will be on animal classifications and ecosystems. Social Studies-When we get back on March 18, the students will be starting their next unit in social studies. We will be focusing on government and citizenship with this unit. The 8th graders are having their annual Charity Basketball Game tomorrow, Friday, March 8. Our class will be attending the second game. The cost of the game is 25 cents. There will be snacks available, too, for 25 cents. Please send 50 cents with your child tomorrow. The money raised goes to a charity that the 8th graders have chosen. Thanks! Scholastic Reading Club orders are due tomorrow, March 8, if you are interested in ordering any books. Our class code is P9T8Q. There is still room for students to sign up for “Sailing with the Savior” on Friday, April 26 from 3:45-7:00 at school. The cost is $25 per student in grades 3 through 5. The teachers have a fun evening planned with a meal, playing “Shipwrecked”, a short prayer service and other
activities. Send the child’s name along with$25 cash or a check made out to GRACE if you are interested. We are limiting this to the first 40 students who sign up. Book reports for March will be using the genre of nonfiction books. The students all have one or more nonfiction books that they are reading for the month. The book report idea sheet went home with students earlier this week. I will attach a copy here, too. The students chose the day that they want to share their book reports at the end of the month. Queridas familias, ¡Parece que la Navidad acababa de terminar, y estábamos esperando las vacaciones de primavera muy lejos en marzo! ¡¡Aquí está!!
Esto es lo que hemos estado aprendiendo acerca de esta semana: Religión: Miércoles de Ceniza y Cuaresma fueron temas importantes esta semana. También comenzamos a aprender sobre las obras corporales y espirituales de la misericordia. Matemáticas: los estudiantes estudiaron más sobre fracciones esta semana. Tomaron una prueba de fracción el jueves. Cuando regresemos de las vacaciones de primavera, comenzaremos una unidad en la medida (pulgadas, centímetros, galones, litros, tiempo y más). Lectura:Nuestro género para el mes de marzo es de no ficción. Hemos estado aprendiendo acerca de las características de los libros de no ficción y de encontrar estas características en libros reales. El miércoles, la clase trabajó conmigo para aprender a escribir una tarjeta de bibliografía para un libro que leeremos y tomaremos notas durante la clase de lectura. En el próximo mes, estaremos trabajando para tomar notas en otros libros de no ficción. Los estudiantes tuvieron la oportunidad de leer con sus 4K Reading Buddies el miércoles. ¡Ambos grupos de estudiantes esperan esta actividad cada dos semanas! Gramática: los temas de esta semana fueron una continuación de los verbos progresivos (verbos que terminan en -ing) y verbos + no como una contracción (es + no = no está). Esa unidad será sobre clasificaciones de animales y ecosistemas. Estudios sociales: cuando regresemos el 18 de marzo, los estudiantes comenzarán su próxima unidad en estudios sociales. Nos enfocaremos en el gobierno y la ciudadanía con esta unidad. Los estudiantes de 8º grado tendrán su juego anual de baloncesto de caridad mañana viernes 8 de marzo. Nuestra clase asistirá al segundo juego. El costo del juego es de 25 centavos. Habrá bocadillos disponibles, también, por 25 centavos. Por favor envíe 50 centavos con su hijo mañana. El dinero recaudado se destina a una organización benéfica elegida por los estudiantes de 8º grado. ¡Gracias!
