15th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

The Pastor’s Corner

Mass Intentions for the Week: July 14-20, 2019

My dear Parishioners, What a coincidence! On this Sunday, when in today’s Gospel we hear a Jewish scholar ask Jesus: “Who is my neighbor?”, ICE agents are conducting enforcement raids in ten major cities, including Atlanta, across the country to round up immigrant criminals and either jail them here or send them back to their native lands. Such an effort, though lawful, will no doubt result in “collateral damage” including the arrest of innocent immigrants and untold emotional and psychological damage especially to immigrant children. In a recent TV interview, Mayor Bottoms, commenting on this latest effort on the part of the federal government to rid the country of our “unwanted,” remarked that one of her own children asked her if they were going to be deported. Collateral damage reaches far beyond the immediate circle of the offending action. In view of today’s Gospel, it should affect you and me. In Jesus’ time, his arrogant inquisitor asked him to define “neighbor” which Jesus did not in dictionary style but through a powerful parable. We are all familiar with the story; no need to repeat it here. It is time for us to answer truthfully the question today’s Gospel puts to us. Who is my neighbor today? The immigrant, documented or undocumented, innocent or criminal, or perhaps the ICE agents and those higher up the chain of command who authorize these raids? It seems to me that all the above are symbolized in that stripped and beaten victim lying half-dead by the road to Jericho. Today, this 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time, “Good Samaritan Sunday” as it is commonly called, the main character, aside from Jesus, isn’t the half-dead victim of robbers or even the good Samaritan, but rather the self-righteous scholar. When asked by Jesus as he concluded the parable, which of the three, the priest, the Levite, the Samaritan, who came upon the robbers’ victim, was neighbor to him, the scholar could not even bring himself to utter the word “Samaritan,” but stated simply, “The one who treated him with mercy.” How hard it is to rid ourselves of our biases, our prejudices, our dislikes, our divisiveness, our self-righteousness! Yet, as the Lord himself reminds us, what seems impossible to humans is always possible with God. Jesus tells us, as he told the scholar of the law, “Go and do likewise.” If he gives us the command, he will also give us the grace to fulfill it. Today, if we can do nothing else, let us pray ardently for the safety and security of all those affected by the enforcement raids. But for those of us who can act in behalf of today’s victims, let us do so. —Fr. Jerome, C.P.

15º DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO

— P. Luis, C.P.
